Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about ChessPairings.org

ChessPairings.org is a free, web-based chess tournament management system. It handles player registration, automatic pairing generation (using Swiss or Round Robin systems), result entry, and standings calculation. The software runs entirely in your browser — no installation required. Simply create an account at my.chesspairings.org and start organizing your tournament.
The Swiss system is the most popular format for chess tournaments with many players. Unlike Round Robin (where everyone plays everyone), Swiss pairs players with similar scores against each other in each round. This way, a tournament with 100 players can determine a winner in just 7-9 rounds instead of 99. The algorithm considers factors like avoiding repeat matchups, balancing colors (White/Black), and rating differences to create fair pairings.
FIDE (the World Chess Federation) periodically updates the official rules for Swiss pairings. The 2026 update, effective February 1st, introduces stricter criteria for color allocation (ensuring players don't get too many games with the same color), improved "floater protection" (preventing the same players from being paired up or down repeatedly), and refined handling of top scorers. ChessPairings.org already implements these rules through our py4swiss engine, making your tournaments compliant before the deadline.
We support 9 tiebreak systems that you can configure in any order: Buchholz (sum of opponents' scores), Buchholz Cut-1 (excluding lowest opponent), Median Buchholz (excluding highest and lowest), Sonneborn-Berger (weighted by results against opponents), ARO (Average Rating of Opponents), Direct Encounter (head-to-head results), Number of Wins, Number of Black Games, and Progressive Score (cumulative score after each round).
ChessPairings.org comfortably handles tournaments with 100+ players. Our asynchronous pairing engine processes large tournaments without timeouts. For very large events (200+ players), pairing generation may take a few seconds longer, but the system remains responsive throughout. There's no hard limit on player count.
Yes! When creating a tournament, you can enable public registration and share a unique link with players. They can register themselves without needing an account. You maintain full control — you can review registrations, add or remove players, and close registration when ready. This is especially useful for open tournaments and club events.
Yes, 100% free with no hidden costs or premium tiers. All features — Swiss and Round Robin pairings, all tiebreak systems, FIDE database access, public tournament links, multi-language support — are available to everyone. We built this software to serve the chess community, and we believe cost shouldn't be a barrier to organizing quality tournaments.
Swiss System: Players with similar scores are paired together each round. Great for large tournaments (20+ players) where time is limited. A clear winner emerges in relatively few rounds (typically √N to 2×√N rounds, where N is the number of players).

Round Robin: Every player plays against every other player. Ideal for smaller groups (up to 12-14 players) where a complete ranking is needed. Double Round Robin has each pair play twice (once with each color).

ChessPairings.org supports both systems, plus 5 Swiss variants for different federation rules.
Yes. The system generates TRF (Tournament Report File) format, which is the standard for FIDE rating submissions. You can also export standings and cross-tables in various formats for your records, website, or federation reports.
No. ChessPairings.org is entirely web-based. It works on any modern browser (Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge) on Windows, Mac, Linux, tablets, or smartphones. Your tournament data is stored securely in the cloud, accessible from any device. Just visit my.chesspairings.org to get started.
